Have you seen the new Selma to Montgomery march museum , that is in Selma it’s really good, I hope government cut backs do not shut it down.

I am from Alabama, yet in the pat twenty five years I have been traveling the country. And there seems to be more racism, in rural Pennsylvania and New York than Alabama .

I hear you, Elwyn! I do a lot of work on building diverse, inclusive communities through a non-profit called The Mosaic Project. They base their work on building The Pyramid of Peace and dismantling the Pyramid of Violence. The base of the Pyramid of Peace is connection -- being in close physical contact with people who are different from ourselves, and working together towards a common goal. The reality is that there are a lot more Black people living in the South than in places like rural New York and rural Pennsylvania. Because White and Black people have more contact with each other in the South, in some ways they are able to develop more mutual respect and empathy.

In the Bay Area, where I live, our communities are extremely segregated, and there is a small Black population. This leads to discrimination and prejudice, even though most people espouse the values of diversity and inclusion. Inclusion and empathy are simply abstract ideas -- without embodied experience and ongoing contact, they are meaningless.

Thank you so much for reading and for sharing your thoughts!

I love the Bay Area and California. And thanks for your reply. Seems like the foreigners I met in your area are hard working honest people. I enjoyed being around them.

Believe it or not there is a town in New York State called Alabama, that I drove through yesterday. Being from Alabama I had to stop there. And have a beer in the famous Alabama Hotel.

While in there I heard a word mentioned that I never hear at least not in pubs in the Birmingham Alabama area in which im from and that is the N word. Also there was a man in there with his trump cap on. I thought it was a rude thing to bring politics into a bar.

Other than this it was a great experience, all people can be nice as long as you keep politics and racism out of my face.
